Orange Christian School Library Learning Centre

The recently completed Library Learning Centre (LLC) for the Orange Christian School has provided the site with an iconic building. The building encompasses general library space as the major component with distance learning cubicles and lecture rooms, together with ancillary staff resource areas, office, amenities and storage areas. The LLC provides the School with a modern library facility, but more importantly the LLC provides a comfortable learning environment for all students.

As part of the Schools’ commitment to Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD), the LLC incorporates several ESD principles. Solar passive heating is achieved by the central full height glazing section, together with appropriate floor finishes to absorb the solar radiation. Shading devices control the ingress of solar radiation during the warmer months. Minimal glazing has been included on the Eastern and Western facades, along with small aperture glazing to the Southern elevation, allowing for a more controlled median temperature within the LLC. The structure of the building is quite simple, comprising of steel framed blade walls with roofing members spanning between. This allows for quick construction and de-construction, enhancing the ESD principle. Materials and their installation were carefully selected to minimise embodied energy and waste.
